Part 18. A Summary (Point of View of HPC)

Well, it is time to summarize Part 1 to 17:
As the famous “killer Micro”, after had “killed”, or “nearly killed”, all the other instructions sets, notably the vector processor good for HPC, X86 has been occupying the biggest market share of HPC for decades. Recently, it seems ARM is repeating X86’s success story: moving from a mass mobile and embedded market upward to HPC. To further advance and conquer the market, ARM has implemented the SIMD extension, the same as X86.
At the same time, the “dying” vector processor resists: The traditional vector processor transforms its existence into the accelerators; While the others are trying to integrate the Cray-like vector processing technology into the RISC-V as its vector extension, in an innovative way, what an interesting task!
The HPC is a rapid changing market place, the only way to survive, if you don’t want to quit, is to continuously advance and invent, and at an amazing pace!

I typically don’t leave comments, but this article truly compelled me to. The way you approached this subject with such sensitivity and understanding is truly remarkable. It’s a significant piece of writing.
